I agree with Peter does that not indicate that there is definitely a scope of negotiations. Would it not be a better idea to understand the reason for the customer asking that question.

There is an argument that by asking "what did you have in mind?" could be the worst approach as you have signified your indication to discount.

Experience has shown that if retail (or any) sales people do a better job of asking questions to identify needs than people would not ask for discounts. And if they do just restae the value they will got from their purchase. Don't discount.
