Writing this a few hours removed from New Year’s Eve, it’s safe to assume you’ve witnessed a ramping-up of public service announcements warning against the dangers of drunk driving. In the spirit of that always-noble trend, I’d like to offer a PSA of my own—one especially applicable to highly mobile, BlackBerry-addicted sales and marketing types like yourself.
Are you a fan of hammering out e-mails to your team while behind the wheel? If so, than you’re long past due to see the error of your ways. For one thing, odds are quite good doing so is illegal in your locale: According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, texting while driving is currently illegal in 14 states for all drivers, as well as 10 additional states for new ones.
Aside from that…well, let’s face it, it’s just a horrendously bad idea and an extremely dangerous practice. But if the threat to life and limb (yours and others’) isn’t enough to deter you, perhaps the threat of having your car insurance rate jacked up 10 to 50 percent will.
According to a 2008 insurance.com study, drivers with a ticket saw their rates increase anywhere from $157 and $248 a year. Those who had an accident claim, on the other hand, saw increases from $302 to $458. While car insurance rate increases vary by state and insurance company, those numbers are obviously nothing to sneeze at.
Okay, have I made my point yet? Good—enough preaching. On behalf of everyone at Sales & Marketing Management, I’d like to wish you all a very Happy and Healthy New Year.
Oh, and by the way: Don’t drink and drive.
